点评:Overall, this was a cruise that never lived up to AMAWaterways' luxury reputation. There were genuine highlights, but too many aspects of the onboard experience fell short.
FOREMOST
... and this may not be exclusive to AMAWaterways ... make sure there is not a Backroads bicycle tour co-ordinating with your cruise. They made up a sizable percentage of the passengers on board, and we observed their group leaders frequently tying up Reception working on their schedule and requirements. It appeared that wait staff often gave priority to the Backroads group, to the detriment of other passengers.
GENERAL DESIGN LAYOUT
We were on the AMAReina. From YouTube videos & online photos etc. it seems she is very similar to AMA's other European riverboats, with the notable exception of the Magna. While the Lounge is open and comfortable, the dining room is rather claustrophobic, with a rather low ceiling - which made it super noisy when busy ... to the point we could not communicate with guests on the other side of one of the round tables. The dominance of the booths in the middle gives the room a bit of a closed in feeling - and on our cruise they were seldom occupied unless the dining room was full. The room at the rear of the boat housing the Chef's Table and mid-day Italian eatery is, on the other hand, quite pleasant though noisy.
Our "swan level" room was comfortable though on the small side, with a well designed bathroom layout. We will not spend the extra for balcony/french window cabins, after previous experience where boats ... and there are countless at some docks like Budapest ... tie up alongside each other up to four deep, and privacy, pardon the observation, is "out the window"!
DINING, SIP & SAIL, SNACKS, etc.
There were definitely some staff artists on our cruise super adept at plating food. Someone observed that if they spent half the attention on the food itself as they do on its presentation the cuisine on board would be outstanding. It wasn't. It couldn't possibly live up to the descriptions on the Menus for one thing. And what is "Herbaceous Sage Oil" anyway? The best meal we had on the trip was at a restaurant our guide suggested in Salzburg. On too many occasions our tablemates (seldom the same people) chose the "always available" option rather than the Menu offerings. The "Fish & Chips" featured one lunchtime was a three inch thick square of "cod" in a soggy, barely chewable batter. British tablemates pronounced it "the worst we have ever eaten". It became a standing joke to see this couple always snacking on something purchased locally during excursions.
The Chef's Table experience was overall a good one, but not exceptional although the wait service was by far the best we experienced on the cruise, and the same physical space is used as an Italian restaurant at lunchtime when the food was very tasty though a bit salty. The definitely not al dente pasta was however quite "mealy" though not overcooked.
Finally, we would be remiss not to mention our overall disappointment with the general meal service. Though menus, etc. were presented immediately, on virtually every occasion - with possibly one exception - we had to wait ten minutes or more before wait staff stopped by to take orders or offer drinks, etc. One evening - the bikers were there in full force - we waited 40 minutes for our Mains and then apparently only because one of the diners at our table called the Maitre d' over. We sat down that evening just after 7PM and service was not complete until nearly 9:30. Of the five nights we ate in the main dining room, only one meal was completed in less than 90 minutes.
Sip & Sail is a nice feature, though the snacks were the same ones that were out most of the day. Airline lounges do a better job. The protein balls were all melty on a couple occasions ... OK, it was super hot during our cruise! ... but they should have been removed from the table.
STAFF
In general pleasant and helpful, though the young lady at Reception from time to time was difficult for us to understand, and on one occasion we eventually gave up trying to resolve our question. Room staff were efficient and pleasant, as was most of the rest of the crew.
The Maître d' deserves a note ... on the night it took 40 minutes for Mains to appear he said he always waited to put in that order until the table had finished the soup course (which we had finished about 35 minutes earlier). That left us with the impression that the delay was somehow being attributed to our table. The very next night someone at the table mentioned to him that we hoped it wouldn't be a repeat of the day before - his reply? "That's the wait staff's job not mine." We also observed him apparently berating staff in public, making us and the waiter involved very uncomfortable. Finally, on the last night he asked how the dinner was. My wife said "Good!" in a very positive tone. To which he replied "Only good? Come on."
EXCURSIONS
Generally too short and often conducted quite amateurishly, though we had a couple standouts - Bratislava and Salzburg were memorable. I'd opt for a cheaper overall fare excluding excursions, and pick and pay for them separately.
ENTERTAINMENT
The Hungarian group on board in Budapest, the Operatic Duo in Salzburg and the House of Strauss concert in Vienna were all standouts. We thought it authentic under the circumstances, and many loved the Vilshofen "Biergarten" but others found it a bit "forced" and "lame".
FINAL OBSERVATIONS
For a cruise line positioned as a premium luxury experience and a cut above the others, AMA certainly fell short on this cruise. At these prices one hopes that needs are not just met but sometimes anticipated. That was not the case.
Had we known in advance that such a large Backroads group would be sharing the cruise, we would have chosen different dates, at the very least.
The itinerary itself was excellent - it's why we picked this cruise. The stateroom was comfortable and impeccably maintained, embarkation was super efficient, and disembarkation/transfer to the airport at 5:30 AM was super as was AMA having someone at the airport to help us check in. Several local entertainers and guides were outstanding. Those positives, however, weren't enough to overcome our overall disappointment, particularly at AMAWaterways' price point.
