It was constructed under Royal Master Mason John Mylne (1637-47) and is a blend of Dutch, Gothic and Palladian architecture. The church was active until closing down in 1952 due to depopulation of the Old Town and rapidly declining church attendance.
The old church remained in disuse for many decades until being repurposed into a tourist information centre and exhibition space starting in the early 2000s.. As of 2021, it has been transformed into a closed indoor marketplace for local independent artists and designers, managed by the Scottish Design Exchange (SDX).
Now you will find a handful of boutique stalls with crafts, art and related items produced locally for sale as gifts or unique souvenirs of your visit to Edinburgh. Definitely worth a quick pop in and look around if sightseeing along the Royal Mile.
