Avebury Village的点评
点评：If you have an interest in prehistory, this is definitely the place for you. Although Avebury is the location of the stone circle (and Manor House), it is also just part of a wider prehistoric landscape. There is a lovely walk past Sidbury Hill to West Kennet long barrow which is very impressive and well worth visiting (there is also limited parking in a layby adjacent to the barrow should you not wish to walk), a walk to the Neolithic causewayed enclosure at Windmill Hill (the site of many of the archaeological finds) which I plan to do on my next visit, the incredible Avenue leading to the stone circle and other notable sites of interest that you may want to take a short drive to unless you want a longer walk. If you ask at the reception in the barn, they can provide you with paper maps for the walks - it is not obvious that they have maps and paths aren’t signposted (but easy to follow if you know) so you need to ask. I also found the Manor House very interesting as well as the dovecote, barn and small museum which focusses on providing information rather than giving an ‘experience’ as some larger museums do. Also found the church very interesting - it provides information on key historical architectural features (this is a working church but welcomes visitors).
Even if you’re not interested in prehistory, a wander round the stones and a visit to the Manor House and gardens is very pleasant.
One thing to note is that the car park fills up quickly on busy days. I got there at 10:45am and got one of the last spaces. I am not aware of any other parking. A lovely place.
