点评：I felt compelled to add to my review below of the Dolphin, Kuza Cave, Paje Beach, The Rock Restaurant, and Jozani Forest Tour I took with Ahmad (not Abdul!—so frustrated I wrote his name incorrectly) and Abdalla. I’m not able to append or edit my original review so I’m adding a new one here.
In my original review, I gave advice to not be a ‘stick in the mud.’ I stand by this advice, but I will not be using that phrase anymore. While in Tanzania and Zanzibar the phrase ‘pole pole’ kept getting on my radar. I knew it literally meant “slowly slowly” but I got a sense it had a deeper meaning, so I dug a little more. I’ve stayed in touch Ahmad since our tour, so I asked him to define it for me and I couldn’t have been more moved by the definition he gave me.
He wrote, “’Pole Pole’ in Swahili does indeed mean “slowly” or “gradually.” However, it’s also used in various contexts to convey patience, caution, or a gentle approach. In the song you linked, it seems to emphasize taking things easy, enjoying life, and not rushing through experiences. In different situations, ‘Pole Pole’ can also imply taking care, being careful, or showing empathy towards someone facing challenges or difficulties. Overall, it carries a nuanced meaning of slowing down, being patient, and taking a relaxed approach to life.”
Ahmad wrote that so perfectly. I don't think a native English speaker could have said it better. I’ve shared this with so many people. I asked other friends I made in Tanzania and Zanzibar, and they all fully agree. There is no single English word or phrase that conveys the all-encompassing meaning as ‘pole pole’ does. It is my new mantra and I thank Ahmad again for making it resonate with me.
