One helpful thing to know before visiting is that you don’t have to buy the combo ticket with the Great Lakes Science Center. If you only want to tour the ship, you can purchase a ticket just for the Mather. Tickets can be bought online or right inside the Science Center.
There is a lot of history on this ship, from the crew’s living spaces to the bridge, engine room, and cargo areas. Walking through each deck gives you a good sense of what daily life was like when the ship was in service. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and they were great about answering questions and pointing out interesting details.
