点评:We visited Son Alegre near Cala d’Or last week and, having visited many wineries over the years, including some excellent ones during the 10 years we lived in New Zealand, we can honestly say that the whole experience at Son Alegre was by far the best we have ever had.
From the moment we arrived, Miguel, the owner, made us feel incredibly welcome. We arrived a little early and he greeted us personally and made sure we had a glass of wine in our hands straight away. While we waited for the rest of the group to arrive, the wine just kept coming. It immediately felt less like a commercial wine tasting and more like being welcomed into someone’s home.
Miguel is clearly hugely passionate about what he does. During the vineyard tour, what really stood out was his philosophy of working with nature rather than simply trying to maximise production. Son Alegre takes an organic and biodynamic approach to its farming, and you can tell that this isn't just a marketing exercise – it is something Miguel genuinely believes in.
After the vineyard tour, we walked to Miguel’s beautiful family home, which was a stunning setting for the rest of the evening. This is where the proper wine and olive oil tasting took place. The wines were excellent and the Sileo extra virgin olive oil was superb. The official tasting includes six wines – two whites, two rosés and two reds – with Maria, the sommelier, explaining the wines and the way Son Alegre works.
Maria deserves a special mention. She was extremely knowledgeable but also funny, relaxed and entertaining, which made the tasting genuinely interesting rather than feeling like a lecture. She clearly knows her wines but has a lovely way of making everyone feel involved.
And then there was the food!
We honestly weren't prepared for either the quality or the amount of food that was provided. What started with the olive oil, bread and pa amb oli developed into a fantastic spread of tapas-style meats, cheeses, fish, olives and breads, followed by a huge dessert which was delicious. There was absolutely no shortage of anything throughout the evening.
The setting was beautiful, the organisation was excellent and the music playing while we ate and throughout the evening added enormously to the atmosphere. It gradually became much more than a wine tasting – it felt like a fantastic evening spent with a group of friends.
One thing that really impressed us was the complete lack of a hard sell. There was no pressure whatsoever to buy wine or olive oil. In fact, the six glasses of wine that were advertised as part of the tasting were proper, generous measures, and our glasses continued to be topped up throughout the evening. You could choose the glass you wanted to drink from and there was certainly no feeling that the wine was being rationed.
As if all of that wasn't enough, coffee was served at the end, followed by brandy.
The value for money is exceptional, but more importantly, it is the genuine warmth and hospitality that makes Son Alegre so special. Miguel, Maria and the whole team were friendly, welcoming and completely genuine throughout the evening.
And then came the final act of kindness.
Our taxi failed to turn up at the end of the night. Rather than simply leaving us to sort it out, Miguel got in his car and drove us back to Cala d’Or himself – and wouldn't accept any payment for doing so. That really sums up the attitude of the people at Son Alegre.
We have been fortunate enough to visit some fantastic wineries around the world, particularly during the 10 years we lived in New Zealand, but Son Alegre stands out above all of them. It wasn't simply the wine. It wasn't simply the food. It wasn't simply the beautiful setting.
It was the whole experience.
If you are staying anywhere around Cala d’Or or the surrounding area and are considering doing a wine tasting, book Son Alegre. Don't hesitate. Go and enjoy the evening, meet Miguel and Maria, taste the wines and olive oil, eat far more than you expect to, and soak up the atmosphere.
For us, this was one of the absolute highlights of our holiday in Mallorca and without doubt the best winery experience we have ever had.
5 stars simply aren't enough!
