Must-see engineering wonder from 200 years ago

点评：Ronda has got to be one of the most extraordinary towns that I've come across, and it's all down to one thing - Puente Nuevo (translated to "New Bridge" in English). This 66 metres stone bridge is truly an architectural wonder, spectacularly spanning a 120-metres deep Tajo gorge that divides the city. The construction of the bridge spans 34 years, finally completed in 1793. What visitors see today is a bridge that seamlessly fused and solidified into its surrounding rugged cliffs and riverbed. One couldn't help but be awestruck by such an engineering feat from 200 years ago! This iconic landmark can be viewed from a few locations, with the closest being the Mirador de Aldehuela right next to the bridge, which also accords a picturesque view of the white buildings perching precariously on the rocks. But the best view is probably from the Mirador del Puente Nuevo which requires descending down the cliffside, at a small charge. This one of its kind wonder in the world has to be seen to believe. With the modern bridge-building technology today, it's unlikely another of such bridges will ever be built in the future. So it's absolutely worth the journey from Madrid even if it's only to see this bridge.
