Boating on the Caledonian Canal with Le Boat

点评：Found location easy to get albeit a long drive from where we live. Staff on reception very friendly and helpful. We were given our Boat familiarisation which lasted close to 2 hrs by Antonia who was excellent and who took us out on the boat for test drive too so we could get use to the controls, she went above and beyond by staying on board whilst we took the boat through our first lock at Laggan and then we were off!
We called Technical Support line one morning as we had a query about the water tank level and we couldn’t find the hose to refill the boat’s consumer water tank. The Technician didn’t answer straight away but called back within seconds of me starting to leave a message and resolved the location of the hose within a minute.
The boating holiday was a great experience with amazing scenery all the way. We were inexperienced with a boat (I’d driven a canal boat on the Norfolk Broads about 20 yrs ago and had been on the Caledonian canal 35 years ago as a 16 year old.) and at times it was challenging to drive the boat particularly in the narrow stretches or when going slowly into the locks gates as the wind and current could quickly put the boat at the wrong angle. That said all the Lock keepers and other people boating were super helpful.
We hired an Elegance which was for 6 people. The boat was in good condition, was well equipped and very clean on the whole when we picked it up. Some parts of the boat are a bit tight such as the shower / en-suite, we felt design wise it might be better to have less en-suites so you could have a larger bathroom/ bigger bedrooms. Beds could be a little more comfortable especially if you’re big boned….might be worth bringing an camping mat / inflatable top to make it better.
We hired the boat for 3 nights and travelled for 9 boat hours (approx £20/hr on top of boat hire charge). 3 nights is really only 2 full days boating unless you pay extra for earlier check in (essential for shorter stays particularly if you do want try and get onto Loch Ness on 3 night boat hire) which wasn’t quite enough time to get through the flight of 5 locks at Fort Augustus which then lead on to Loch Ness. I’d advise anyone going boating on the Caledonian Canal to try and go for at least 4 nights or better still a full week as the weather might also make it difficult to go across Loch Ness or Loch Lochy.
In summary it was an experience we’ll never forget, the Le Bost staff at Laggan were super helpful, friendly and also willing to go the extra mile. The scenery on the Caledonian canal is far better than the Norfolk Broads but do be prepared for wet weather and cool temperatures.
