Kayaking on the Okefenokee should be a bucket list thing to do!

点评：This place and exploration on the water should be on more bucket lists! It’s magical being in the middle of a wlidish place where animals easily outnumber humans.
Timing is critical!!! Sunrise and sunset are prime bird and animal watching times, blackflies start ramping up in May and June…there is shade but also a lot of open space so a hot day at noon in July…meh.
So let me talk about alligators. I counted about 30 on the banks of each mile stretch. You can be safe around alligators just like you can be safe around black bears. If you scare each other, things get more dicey. You have to stay in the boat…hands, feet…no capsizing.
It’s safe to go on a solo trip if you are prepared for the weather, keep distance within your capability, bring a gps to ensure you are on the right route and place, etc.
I chose to go with a guide to learn much more than I would have on my own…gators have tags that link to their names! Where bears are seen most often, how park staff monitor alligator behavior and make sure you don’t encounter an unpredicatble one on your camping platform…what flows where, what happens when there’s a drought (animals and birds move towards the channels)…
The outfitters run all sorts of excursions from shaded motor boats to large school groups.
Somehow, the park staff are managing to keep everything ship shape given recent budget and staffing cuts. Big kudos to them.
