点评:One of two historic forts on SXM, Fort Amsterdam sits high above the island's Dutch coast, on a narrow peninsula that juts out between Little Bay and Great Bay. That incomparable view is reason enough to pay a visit, but history buffs and nature lovers will find treasures as well.
Established by the Dutch in 1631 to protect their colonial outpost in the volatile Caribbean, the fort was captured by the Spanish just two years later. A unsuccessful Dutch effort to recapture the Fort in 1644 was led by Peter Stuyvesant, who lost a leg in the attempt. It would eventually be returned to the Dutch in 1648 through the Treaty of Westphalia.
There's not much left of the Fort today besides a ruined stone building, a handful of cannon and the stone walls overlooking the harbor. Still, it's an important piece of St Maarten history and makes for an amazing morning hike. Go through the gates of the Divi Little Bay resort (tell the guard you're visiting the Fort), park in the public lot, and follow the signs through the property to the Fort. It's a short but fairly steep climb to the top of the rampart, so stay awhile once you get there. Besides ruins and the incredible view, you'll be rewarded with sightings of iguanas and brown pelicans, who nest on a slope below. Plan on spending at least an hour here, then head down into Philipsburg for drinks and dinner. A visit to Fort Amsterdam is a must for anyone making SXM their Caribbean home away from home!
