点评:This is for the Mall Hair Salons within the mall. This doesn't account for the rest of it.
BEFORE YOU GO: This salon is best for getting your hair straightened. If you have wavy or curly hair, I would only recommend getting a treatment for trimming weaker hair. I wouldn't recommend going there for styling and maintaining curly hair styles.
Miami is a heavily Latino area, so expect to know fluent Spanish and English to communicate what you want with the stylists directly. For those who only speak English, they will understand you.
I have POC hair that's very curly (2b-3a), so this experience might not apply for everyone who has fine, straight, or slightly wavy hair.
Hairstyle that I wanted: Shaggy pixie cut
My appointment costed $250. Here's the breakdown:
- Deep wash (shampoo and conditioner)
- Drying
- Trimming weaker hair strands and dead ends
- Applying a keratin treatment
Positive points: The staff treated me well as a guest. Their hospitality was much nicer compared to other salons that forcefully maneuvers your head.
My stylist did a great keratin treatment with deep washes. She was gentle with my head. She did not speak harshly to me.
Safety points: They ensured the protective plastic covered your entire body during the shampooing and conditioning; not a drop of water got on my clothes nor the back of my neck. They also ensured that my hair was not dripping too much when they wrapped the towel into a turban on my head.
Criticism: The stylist didn't seem to understand the type of hairstyle that I wanted. She was communicating with me and my friend in both English and Spanish. Bilingually, we told her of the hairstyle that I wanted. We didn't expect straight hair, but to be able to trim the hair in a way that matches the shape in the photos.
When I arrived at the salon, I had a shoulder-length bob that reached a little beyond my shoulders. Despite the current hair length I had (shrinkage with water included), my stylist told me that my hair might've been too short with the style that I wanted.
When she told me this, I understood that the hairstyle would've been a little longer with the length. Not only would've it been a little longer, it also would've had layers. I told her that if she needed to leave my hair a little longer so it doesn't look too short, that was perfectly okay with me.
She seemed to have understood me, but when she started to straighten my hair, I felt that the back of my head was still in the same length as before but layered. This proved to be true after I waited a few days for the keratin treatment to settle in and I washed out my hair.
I showed her two reference photos (front and side) of the style that I wanted. The stylist kept telling me, "It's okay, I got this, I know what I'm doing." I started to feel uneasy here, but for the price - I didn't want to be rude by repeatedly insisting that the style should be applied. I allowed her to trim and straighten my hair some more, mistakenly believing that it might take a while for the style to appear after drying.
Showed my reference photos to the hair stylist again, because she was about to start the trimming process. She told me, "I know what I'm doing, it's okay you don't have to show it to me." Again, I felt very uneasy because I was aware that the way she was styling it was not the correct one.
When the session was done, the stylist incorrectly told me that once I washed my hair, I would get the style that I wanted (shaggy pixie cut). However, when I waited a few days after they styled my hair - I showered it with a sulfate-free, silicon-free, and paraben-free shampoo. I gave it an hour and some minutes for my hair to air dry. Once my hair was properly dried, it returned to the same style that I wanted to get rid of.
When I allowed it to air dry and put on a healthy leave- conditioner for my hair, it settled into a layered bob style. This is when I found out that my stylist still kept the bob in the back, which was very different from what I asked her for within the salon.
If the business learned how to style outside of only straightening hair, then I think it would be more successful. For $250, I expected quite a different cut and someone who would be willing to listen bilingually. For now, I'll seek another salon that fully understands curls.
