Proper aviation and transport museum run by volunteers
North East Land, Sea and Air Museum的点评
点评：We were in the area to catch a ship from North Shields. There was a delay to departure so we decided to visit the museum to kill some time. I’m very glad we did.
There are at least two types of museums:
The professional, funded ones which promise “A great day out for all the family!” - They can be very smart, clean and have excellent facilities - but can often tend towards being a playground for kiddies with the exhibits very much a back drop to the ‘fun activities’, educational displays and play areas.
The other type of museum is run by enthusiasts who are volunteers , usually on a shoe string. They are keen to preserve history and record people’s stories and will do their best to save and restore exhibits that would otherwise end up being scrapped. This museum is definitely in this latter category - lots of ‘works in progress’, unfinished projects and junk everywhere - which is why I love it. There are, however, plenty of interesting aircraft and vehicles on display which are in excellent restored condition. It is the sort of museum where you would want to return in the future to see how projects are progressing. There are also some very nice models and a great wartime street exhibition. I found the staff very friendly and keen to talk. They could certainly do with a few hundred thousand pounds to provide more hangers and facilities if anyone is feeling generous.
Refreshments are very limited. There is a very good coffee machine - but only biscuits to eat and the hangers are all unheated and about 10 degrees colder than the outside temperature- so wrap up warm if it is a cold day.
