点评:Mixed feelings about the Colosseum, but the Roman Forum is a must-see!We visited both sites on a self-guided tour starting at 4:30 PM in the stifling July heat. The exterior of the Colosseum is incredibly impressive, but the inside fell a bit short for us. Having previously visited El Jem in Tunisia, we expected more. The interior of the Colosseum has extensive concrete reconstructed floors on levels 1 and 2, making it hard to tell what is authentic. It felt completely geared up to mass tourism. It was also sad to see modern graffiti inside, and the modern placards outside of statues detract from the atmosphere. Additionally, there were far too many aggressive scammers hassling people in the queues outside. However, heading straight to the Roman Forum afterward completely saved the day. It was the absolute highlight of our entire Italy trip! The views of the city were beyond stunning, and the endless ancient wonders left us completely in awe. The gardens were stunning and a joy to wander through. At this time of day, the large crowds had dispersed which made for a leisurely stroll through the archeological site. I am so glad we went!
