点评：We recently visited Madrid Zoo Aquarium and unfortunately, it was quite a disappointing experience.
I want to start by saying that I understand zoos are not for everyone and opinions on them can vary. However, even taking that into account, this visit didn’t feel in line with what you might expect from a modern zoo.
Many of the enclosures appeared outdated and far too small, lacking the space and environmental enrichment that you now see as standard in newer or recently updated wildlife parks. Compared to current trends in zoo design—where there is a strong focus on animal welfare, natural habitats and conservation—it felt like this zoo has not kept up.
What was most concerning was the condition and behaviour of some of the animals. A number of them appeared lethargic, bored or displaying repetitive behaviours that can sometimes indicate stress or poor mental stimulation. It was quite uncomfortable to see and took away from what should have been an enjoyable and educational experience.
To put it into perspective, if you compare it to somewhere like Woburn Safari Park in the UK, the difference is stark. At Woburn, animals have large, open spaces and are clearly part of well-managed conservation and preservation programmes. The overall environment feels much more focused on animal wellbeing, which makes a huge difference to the visitor experience too.
Madrid Zoo does have a good variety of animals and is in a convenient location, but it really feels like it would benefit from significant investment and modernisation, particularly in terms of enclosure size, enrichment and overall welfare standards.
Hopefully improvements will be made in the future, as it has the potential to be so much better.
