点评:Naturalising in Toscano
Had an amazing three days (mostly Arezzo region, with a little bit of Umbria) refreshing my memory of some of the more common European birds but also looking for a couple of regional specialties here in migration. Marco Valtriani, my guide, was a very well-rounded naturalist, who indulged my additional botanical explorations and even a little catch-and-release butterfly action (including the very cooperative Little Heath below)! My interest is in visiting new and interesting habitats, and Marco was extremely knowledgeable about the history of land use and biodiversity from the Etruscans forward, as well as cultural insights into the natural history of St. Francis of Assisi (we even visited La Verna) and explored a number of the special ecoregions like the old growth forests in Foreste Casentenisi (where we got SO CLOSE to Black Woodpecker; we heard its characteristic drumming but the shy bird could not be located). Other highlights included Montoli's Warbler in the biancane at Lucciola Bella, chasing a very uncooperative but eventually seen well Eurasian Thick-knee in the Val d'Orcia, multiple Short-toed Snake Eagles at close range, and a completely unexpected Spotted Redshank at Lago Trasimeno. Multiple Hoopoes were an additional treat! I would heartily recommend Marco for either a targeted bird mission or a rounded naturalist education for this special region of Italy. I'll be joining a Naturetrek tour in Puglia later this week but feel well caught up on expected European birds thanks to Marco's short course!
