点评:This attraction is essentially just the opportunity to view a single fresco, by two hands. But what hands! The upper zone preserves the only Raphael painting remaining in Perugia, and it is a trial run for his Disputa in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican. Thus it is the most ambitious fresco attempted by the young Raphael before arriving in Rome and an important art historical document. Although the fresco is badly damaged, the brilliance of Raphael's hemispherical composition is evident, and you can sense his power especially in the lower half of the Christ figure, which reminds me of what Michelangelo said of a later Raphael fresco in Rome: for that knee alone, it's worth the price.
What makes this fresco particularly poignant is that Raphael was called to Rome before completing it, and it was finished years later, shortly after Raphael's death, by his elderly teacher, Perugino. Perugino made no effort to harmonize his contribution with that of his superstar pupil but worked in his own time-honored technique, so we find the High Renaissance floating above the earlier style of the late Quattrocento. But a quick comparison of St. Benedict with the bearded saints below him betrays Raphael's training in Perugino's workshop. This would be a 4-star attraction in Rome, but in Perugia it deserves all five.
