点评:We had dived before with Pepe Dive and we had a great experience. This time the experience to book and deal with the process was, as expected, smooth and nice, what was disappointing was the divemaster who guided us.
Her name is Jessica del Pozo from Andorra. First she was not well aware of our level of diving and started providing indications as if we were children. We were a group of 4 and we were placed with another couple, one of them was finshing an open water course.
I can perfectly understand that with an OW person in the group the dive will be shorter, but at 30 mins we were already finshing the dive. My partner has a professional camera and for those who know, photographers take time to take pictures underwater, the guide, never cared about that and no planning was done accordingly BEFORE THE DIVE, in other words, she just said we had to be together all the time and that we were not, which is not true because we could see each other and I was the glue between the guide and my partner. As my partner was taking a picture and focused on that and Jessica decided to finish the dive at 30 mins, because probably the open water indicated so, they started to ascend while my partner was still taking a picture, so I shot my SMB to ascend with my partner and we were 5 meters below the group. When we exited she complained that I had to let her know if I was going to shoot my SMB and that it was not allowed, but she said so in a very bad tone. I told her that if that was the case, she needed to say that before the dive, and that it made no difference to have my SMB deployed when we were less than 3 meters from her when doing the safety stop. Later it was confirmed by someone else from the shop that it was indeed possible to shoot the SMB, I do not know why she had to throw a tantrum about it.
She was also bragging that she was a cave diver and that she had done wreck penetration, probably at a specialty level from PADI or SSI, which is nothing, but surprisingly she did not know the universal signal for the numbers in tech and cave diving which is the same one used at GUE recreational level, and she said she did not understand me. I learnt later that she was not certified as a cave/tech diver. It is not necessary to have such certification to guide in OW, but then she should not claim skills that she clearly lacks.
Then for the second dive we told her that we would do the safety stops at 6 and 3 meters for 1 minute, she was offended, as of why we were doing that, and that that was not common for recreational diving and that she did not understand. At GUE RECREATIONAL courses, safety stops are done like that and are better for safety to control bubble formation, the 5 meter rule was implemented as an extra measure to control for weak buyancy skills for most divers. Again, if she was really so well educated in diving, she should know the starndars of other agencies, even RECREATIONAL ones and we were saying that before the dive; furthermore, if she was at 5 meters and we were at 6 and 3 meters, it made no difference to her as we were within distance.
On that second dive we started diving in a deep area where we could not see the bottom and needed to swim at 15 meters depth with no vissibility of the floor to get to a shallower area to start the dive, we lost 8 minutes in doing so, and again at 29 minutes we were finishing the dive, for a total dive time of 36 minutes. We decided not to do the third dive. As a divemaster, and knowing her student consumption, as part of the plan at surface, it should have been mentioned the estimated dive time given the consumption of one of the members, I think going from average dive time of 50 to 30 mins merits that mentioning before the dive. All good divemasters I know, teach students how to calculate consumption to be aware of how much one consumes per minute depending on depth and plan better, this divemaster probably does not even know how to do such calculations for herself.
We complained to the manager of this divemaster, like many of the PADI/SSI divemasters who are mass produced in Roatan and Ko Taoh it is incredible to see the low quality of guides who lack leadership skills to lead diving groups and who cover that lack of skills with an arrogant attitude speaking as if they really knew. This divemaster was just that, the below average diver who just got a standard certification and who is ok for very beginner divers who do not have the tools to question anything, she is clearly underperforming to lead more experienced groups.
I did not expect a reinbursement and it was not about the money, but given the terrible service of this guide, it would have been nice to get one as a courtesy, at least for the third dive.
I understand that divemasters change often and it is difficult to find someone reliable, I appreciate Pepe Dive management service but not that of the divemaster they currently have.
Probably to guide unexperienced divers who can not question anything, this divemaster is relatively ok, as it is the case sadly that the average recreational diving industry has low standards but this divemaster is clearly not equipped to lead a group of divers with experience more than basic one.
As opposed to this divemaster, I am cave diver certified by GUE and also Rec 3 by the same agency. I am also PADI master scuba diver which means nothing to me as after I found GUE I discovered how bad PADI and many other agencies were, for those who know GUE they know that there is a minimum standard to approve courses and that should at least give me significant authority to opine of this terrible service by this divemaster.
I have travelled to more than 105 countries, dived in 5 continents and this is really the worst divemaster ever.
Given I believe Chano, the manager is a responsible person, I hope he will do something about it and I would give the opportunity again to dive with Pepe dive as long as this divemaster does no longer work there.
