点评:Firstly the good points. I went first thing in the morning, taking a short vaporetto ride to the island. It was a really lovely place to sit and watch Venice in the peace and quiet. By the church you can look back over at the main island and see the crowds milling around the waterfront in front of the Piazetta. You also get a lovely view of Santa Maria della Salute. If you walk down to the other side of the small island, past the marina, you get another lovely view out to the outer islands and beyond. It's just a fantastic place to sit and watch the boats go by and you could do a lot worse than bringing your book with you and sit with your legs dangling over the side of the sea wall just taking in the atmosphere of Venice for a few hours.
Now the downside. San Giorgio Maggiore itself is a lot better from the outside than it is on the inside, which is one of the more bare and uninspiring of Venice's many churches. The main thing I came to see, as well as Palladio's magnificent architecture was Tintoretto's Last Supper, but where it would have been was just a bare piece of wall, with no explanation as to why it wasn't on view. There's no one there to ask either. Similarly the campanile was closed when I visited.
So, I thought it was a terrific island to visit for some peace and calm but the church is best viewed from a distance.
