点评:This "love nest" was built by the richest man in Italy in the 1500s. Agostino Chigi (pronounced kee-gee) was the banker of the Popes and was worth the equivalent of $10B-$15B in today's dollars but that doesn't really express his true wealth. He was more like the Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk of the era. Only the Fuggers of Germany were richer and, in fact, they kinda carved up certain trade routes and markets between them such that they each had monopolies. Anyway, Chigi built this villa to show off his wealth and as a testament to his love for his mistress whom he couldn't marry because she was just too "low class" for the Roman elite. The Pope finally gave him a dispensation to marry her near the end of his life and their children together became legitamized and were able to inherit. The Villa is named "Farnesina" because after his death his wealth was fragmented among his several children and they didn't want to maintain the expensive property. So they sold it to the rising Farnese family whose palace was just across the river Tiber. Michelangelo even designed a bridge for them to connect the two properties, but it was never built. Get a guided tour. You'll miss too much of the story without it.
