Most Impressive Bunker In Normandy, and Site where Lt. Preston Niland (fictionalized to “Ryan” in the movie) was KIA.

点评：This small, off-the-beaten-path bunker is one of the most powerful sites we’ve visited on our three trips to the Normandy Beaches - and we return on each visit.
Cedric has excavated this bunker and filled it with original German gear he has discovered both on-site or close by over the years.
As you walk through the cramped space of the bunker, you feel the intensity of both the German soldiers living in the bunker, and of the lines of fire they saw as they rained shells down upon the invading US Naval ships l, and troops landing on the beaches.
Then, there’s the small white cross marking the site where Lt. Preston was temporarily buried, just where he died assaulting the bunker on June 7th.
His brother Bob had died the day before (June 6th) on the beaches, and another brother had gone missing 3 weeks earlier in Burma after bailing out of a B-25 and was presumed KIA.
And so, after Preston Niland was killed here, the War Department began searching for Fritz Niland, the 4th Niland brother, who had landed in Normandy with the Airborne the night of June 5/6 - and the story of “Saving Private Ryan” was born.
This site is a MUST-SEE in Normandy.
