点评:We were on our first safari and picked Kruger for its legendary reputation and the Sabie Sands area for the best guarantee of seeing "big cats".
Wild Kruger's Johan Beuys responded to our preferences/requests and arranged for us to stay in 3 places for 3 very different experiences.
We had 2 days at Hippo Hollow Hotel in Hazyview so we could do the Panorama route. It was stupendous and something you shouldn't miss! The day was overcast, foggy at times, and rainy--yet everything we saw was just jaw-dropping!! We had Jeanette as our guide from Langa Langa and she was wonderful, informative, caring about our experience professional and a safe, responsible driver! Hippo Hollow has beautiful rooms, comfortable beds, security, and wonderful landscaping. However, you are a prisoner there unless you have your own car. We had arrived about 4pm and wanted to walk to a nearby restaurant, but of course, then take an Uber or taxi back. The man doing intake was truly alarmed at this idea and said it wasn't safe--at any time. Turns out there are no Ubers or taxis in Hazyview. Your only option is to have their buffet dinners.
We then moved to Kruger National Park with our guide Frans for 2 nights in a rondavel (#206) on the river in Skukuza Rest Camp. The experience was much more rustic -- which we could deal with. However, the safe in the closet did not work and our bathroom window had no latch or lock--only 2 holes in the metal where the lock had been. There was no security for the room. We brought our valuables with us on each game drive as a result. The office person we asked for help told us NONE of the safes work in the park! The trade off however was having the most astounding, knowledgeable, informative, passionate guide we have ever encountered. Frans is an outstanding professional and we were so lucky and grateful to have him! He is a natural teacher and has vast comprehensive knowledge of animal behavior, plant life, topography, weather, the environment, as well as S Africa. Johan provided vouchers for our meals at The Cattle Baron which were very good and we can also recommend.
Sadly, we left Frans but then moved on to the much smaller and intimate Umkumbe Safari Lodge for 2 more nights. This is a private game reserve further north on the Sabie River. We had a large, beautifully outfitted room (with safe) with a verandah and outdoor shower. There was cold water in a thermos, air con, coffee/tea making equipment, and a beautiful bathroom. The buffet food was good overall. We were a little surprised to find lemonade/iced tea/even some salads and meats excessively sweet. Taste first!
Luckily, Frans had taught us so much about wildlife and the region that we had a good time nevertheless on their game drives. It's all in the GUIDES. The person we had at Umkumbe was rather young and, though he would answer a direct question about something, he rarely presented information, background, or explanations for what we were seeing or MIGHT see. We (all 7 of us) rode around in silence for long periods! One of us did try to jolly him along, but he didn't take the hint. He didn't seem to grasp basic guiding? Such a missed opportunity. At one point he even said to ask him questions. Ok, but new tourists to SA need some enlightenment first and then they'll have a million questions! The trackers, both Sipho and Forward are pros and found animals for us: 2 leopard sightings, giraffes, elephants, hyenas, impalas, a rhino and a hippo. Be aware there is no tracker on the morning drives. Some of the other guides seemed more professional and experienced.
All in all, Wild Kruger provided a varied, interesting safari experience for us responding to the interests we enquired about from the beginning. They respond quickly to WhatsApp messages and are unfailingly polite and thoughtful in their replies. We thank you Johann and Rochelle for all you did to introduce us to Kruger!
