点评:This ancient marketplace is just past the ticket office so it’s the very first site that you see when arriving at Delos. This is the starting point for exploring the island.
Located right down beside the Sacred Harbour, it was one of the main markets on Delos and dates back to 125 BC. Trade thrived here. The place would have been buzzing, with goods being loaded and unloaded in the bustling port, throngs of workers and merchants, and busy shops and workshops.
The main feature is a curious round marble structure in the centre of the square. There’s no sign or explanation for what it was. A guide or good guidebook is handy here. It looks a lot like it might have been a well but we later learnt that it was a memorial, dedicated to Hermes, god of commerce and trade and protector of travellers.
Next to it is what’s left of a small temple. It’s easy to pick out because of the solid, square marble offertory box decorated with two snakes.
The rest of the agora is a flat open area, paved with gneiss slabs and studded with pillars and half-columns. Fragments of column bases, fallen shafts and capitals cover the area. You can still clearly see where the main square was. The southern and eastern sides are flanked by the remains of shops. Parts of walls and the floors of many shops are still in place and if you look carefully you can also see you can see holes in the pavers which once held tent poles for awnings or where make-shift stalls were set up, selling their wares under canopies
We wondered about the strange name, ‘the Competaliasts’. They were an association, made up if members of Roman guilds, mostly freemen and slaves from Sicily who worked for Italian merchants. Later we would see the Agora of the Italians and also the Agora of the Delians.
We didn’t spend too long at the agora. It’s easy to get caught up here but if like us, you’re doing a self-guided walk, then I’d recommend not lingering and instead, get a head start on the tour guides.
It’s a looped walking trail so you will find yourself back at the same point at the end. If you scoot through here now, you’ll can have the place almost to yourself later on.
From here, we headed around to our left, towards the next main structure, the massive Portico of Philip V. The direction is pretty clear and there are blue arrows which point the way also.
DELOS NOTES:
You need at least a couple of hours to explore the island but be aware that there is no shade and few facilities. You’ll need to bring your own snacks and water. The only toilets are by the entrance. Currently the museum is closed until 2024. If you’re not doing a tour, then bring a good guide-book or download a self-guided tour beforehand. When we were there, they had free maps but only in Greek.
