The 2nd of 3 Temples that Made Up The Ancient Heart of Delos
Temple Of The Athenians的点评
点评：This is one of a group of 3 temples, all built in a row and dedicated to the god, Apollo. Collectively they are known as ‘the Sanctuary of Apollo’ and were the ancient heart of Delos.
The Temple of the Athenians stands in the middle, with the larger Temple of the Delians to its right and the smaller Temple of Poros on the left.
Built between 425 - 420 BC, the temple was constructed of finest, white Pentelic marble, a very valuable material. It was too valuable to be handled by just any old workers. Special craftsmen would have been shipped in.
Of the original building not much is left today. Originally, there were 6 columns at the front and 6 at the back. Inside, 7 statues including the obligatory one of Apollo, stood on a horseshoe-shaped base.
None of these are left. It looks not unlike an ancient building site, with large blocks of white stone, widely scattered and rubble strewn across the area.
What remains, are just the lower foundations.
The separate information boards next to each of the three temples were really helpful. Information was in both English and Greek and each one includes diagrams and pictures, without which I’d have struggled.
We moved on pretty quickly from this temple complex to the next main sight, the famous Avenue of Lions.
DELOS NOTES:
You need at least a couple of hours to explore the island but be aware that there is no shade and few facilities. You’ll need to bring your own snacks and water. The only toilets are by the entrance. Currently the museum is closed until 2024.
If you’re not doing a tour, then bring a good guide-book or download a self-guided tour beforehand. When we were there, they had free maps but only in Greek.
