点评:There’s definitely no need to do book an organised walking tour of Oia. It is a very small town, with just a handful of main sights which are all within close walking distance of each other. What’s more, much of the pleasure is in exploring the charming streets at your own pace. The main sights are the Panagia Church, the famous blue domes, the Venetian Castle ruins, the windmills and Amoudi Bay. We arrived in Oia, having finished the Fira-Oia Hiking Trail so our first brief stop was at the Agios Georgios Church on the outskirts of the town. For anyone not doing the hiking trail, a much better starting point is the Panagia Church.
Our self-guided walk was as follows:
Stop #1 - Panagia Church.
We started here. It's Oia’s largest church and is mostly always open. Entry is free.
Stop #2 - Nikolaou Nomikou Street.
This is Oia’s crowded main street, lined with shops, cafes, galleries, hotels and boutiques.
Stop #3 - The Blue Domes.
This was the only tricky part. We had trouble finding the path where everybody goes to get that Instagram-famous shot. The path runs off Nikolaou Nomikou St, alongside a large white church (see photo below). It is directly opposite the Gold & Silver Store at #49 (see photo below). Follow the path around to the right to popular viewing point but be prepared to line up to get to the prime photo-taking position.
Stop #4 - the Venetian Castle.
Returning to the main street, we persevered through the crowds to the end to see the ruins of St Nicholas Castle. Not much is left but it’s perhaps the best viewpoint in Oia and is a very popular sunset spot.
Stop #5 - Amoudi Bay.
Just below the castle, we found the staircase down to Amoudi Bay, a very beautiful bay with clear, blue water, surrounded by dark red volcanic rock cliffs. We walked down the steep, winding staircase on what was originally the old donkey trail and stopped for a very late lunch at one of the lovely seafood places right on the water. Taxis will take you back up to the main town but we walked (slowly) back up the stairs.
Overall, I’d say that Oia is a must-see and I would have hated to miss it. However there is one major caveat - be prepared for the crowds. It's only a small town so the narrow streets can be cramped and the crowds can be crushing. We were forewarned but even so, the combined heat and jostling made it unpleasant at times and I found it very confronting.
