点评:We happened onto this museum after visiting St Jerome monastery. We paid 18 euros/person to see the cloister and church (free admission for church) that took us less than an hour to see in its entirety. It could have been because it is under construction/preservation but not sure. You look at this beautiful building that takes up an entire large block but only see a fraction, so you wonder what is the rest. Apparently, some of the original monastery now houses an archaeological museum(currently closed for renovation)and a maritime museum. Since we are very interested in the history of the many Portuguese explorers, we visited the maritime museum and it did not disappoint! A mere 8 euros/person! I am not sure why it does not make the top of the list of things to do. It was January (slow season) and had the place to ourselves. We stayed for over 2 hours but wished we had set aside more time because we could have stayed another 2! It is self guided and SO much information! If you look beyond the exhibits, you can tell it is part of the original monastery. It takes you through the explorers, war times, more current conflicts and naval info. Too much to convey in this short post. It is not to be missed if you have any interest in the history of Portugal maritime facts or stories.
