点评:This museum occupies trackside space and a signal box at the South end of Epping station car park. I visited with my wife. Although our local transport and its history is of interest, we are certainly not devoted railway enthusiasts. It was a local attraction that we visited out of curiosity before walking in the forest. It turned out to be an excellent and informative place to visit and surpassed our expectations.
We were shown round by a friendly and knowledgable volunteer, who had worked as a specialist in railway safety. The tour begins at a shunting locomotive on a short section of track, where the workings of the signalling and safety systems can be explained and demonstrated. Then we moved to the lower part of the signal box, which is a museum like collection of both technical items and London Underground memorabilia and also has a model railway - so suitable for a variety of interests. Then we went to the top part of the signal box. This has a rebuilt signalling control layout for the Epping section (from the days when the line here continued to Ongar and there were goods sidings and a gasworks). Anybody keen can operate the controls to allow an imaginary train to progress through this section of line.
There is also a small shop, but we didn't have time to look around that. Allow 90 minutes (or more if you want to spend time working the signals).
We really enjoyed our visit and came away with much improved knowledge of how the railway system works. I enjoyed the items about how the railway in this area worked in the past. I recommend this as a place to visit, especially if you have an interest in how stuff works. Free to visit, but do leave a donation!
