点评:Celano Castle takes its name from the Sienese Piccolomini family, despite it only being owned by this family for about 130 years, since 1463 until 1591. A Piccolomini noblemen, nephew of Pius II, the "humanist pope", received it as an annex of the fiefdom from the King of Naples, Ferrante of Aragon. However, the castle as it stands today was actually begun in 1392 by the Berardi family, at the time Counts of Celano. After 1591, it was acquired by the Peretti family, then by others, until it became state property in 1893. In any case, for centuries it was owned by various feudal families who held the county of Celano, an important territory, also central to the area of Lake Fucino (now drained).
The castle today stands imposingly: it's clear that it was once a very important stronghold, but that it soon transformed its military function into a mixed function, a castle-palace one. However, the expert eye will readily recognize that its form is "too" perfect to be entirely authentic. Indeed, it was extensively restored after the severe damage inflicted by the 1915 earthquake (so tragic that it killed over 30,000 people into the area and left only one building standing out of hundreds in the nearby, important city of Avezzano). Among other things, the loggia in the courtyard, which now leads to the castle, collapsed.
Aware of such destruction and reconstruction, one can still appreciate the building both for its location, for its exceptionally valuable architectural works, and finally for the art and archaeological exhibitions housed within it today.
