点评:I didn’t expect to enjoy my visit as much as I did, and went really to accompany my partner, but I was very pleasantly surprised.
The museum, within the Betteshanger Country Park, is free to enter but donations are welcome and there’s a box for cash or a contactless machine at the entrance. My partner and I were shown round by Phillip Sutcliffe, volunteer and ex-miner, who had many a tale to tell about the time of the miners’ strike when he was an active trade unionist. He was a real “mine of information” about life down the pits, working conditions, equipment used. His wife Kay figures greatly too, a member of the Women’s Support Group, who wrote a poem which has become famous and has been set to music. To have him show us round enhanced the visit greatly.
Over two floors - there’s a lift or stairs - the museum isn’t huge, and it’s all indoors, but it’s very well laid out, spotlessly maintained and there really is much to see and learn.
Parking is free for Blue Badge holders - register at Reception - and also free if you spend over £17 (I think that’s the figure) in the Lamp Room, the excellent restaurant attached. I’ve reviewed that separately. Worth noting - there’s a leaflet at the Reception desk which gets you money off meals and it’s well worth having. I wish we’d seen it before having breakfast!
