点评:Cluny Abbey is not just about the Abbey. It is about the town, the Art and Archeology Museum, the Tour des Fromages, various art exhibitions and only finally do you get to the Abbey itself. We bought tickets to the Abbey, the museum and the Tour des Fromages. I really liked the art and archeology museum as well as the Tour des Fromages with its views of Cluny and the Eglise-Notre Dame. The tower had little openings in the mesh for taking unimpeded photos.
Visiting the actual abbey starts with the Pope Gelasius Palace. The small cloister has the video presentation showing how Cluny Abbey developed and also sculptures from the 11th to 17th centuries. The Galilee Passage displays reliquaries and then you are onto the nave and the transepts which are all that remains of the enormous Major Ecclesia. The Jean de Bourbon Chapel has consoles depicting prophets. The visit continues with a variety of other buildings mostly dating from the 18th century. Honestly, it was a bit difficult to keep it clear in my head.
Accessing the Abbey usually takes you from a paid car park then along the main shopping street (where helpful or demoralizing signs tell you how many metres you have still to go) to the Tourist Office to buy tickets and, only after that, to the main entrance of the Abbey complex which, in our case, was on the opposite side to where we parked. Where we parked did have a secondary tourist office but it was closed. It is quite a large complex and took us 3 hours to walk around.
