点评:Just a short walk from the centre of the village at Church Square following Victoria St. and then turning right on to Bridge Street you will come to the The Old Royal Bridge.
The present stone bridge was financed by the County Road Trustees and opened by Queen Victoria in 1885. It’s a four-arch bridge with dressed-stone arch rings and pinned ashlar spandrels, built in by two engineers, Jenkins and Marr.
It was not the first bridge at this site, there is a plaque on the bridge giving a short history. The inscription explains that the first bridge on the site provided the essential commercial link to the wells and was built in 1783. This original bridge was destroyed by flooding in 1789.
Thomas Telford constructed a second stone bridge in 1809, which was swept away in the `Muckle Spate` floods of 1829. A wooden bridge was built in 1834, and replaced by the present stone bridge.
Today the Royal Bridge carries the B971 road across the River Dee on the south east side of Ballater. The bridge gives one some great scenic views down the River Dee.
When the river is low and clear the supporting base of the earlier bridge can be seen in the water. There are also still some wooden piles in the water near the bank, probably the remains of the wooden bridge.
