There were certainly some positives, but unfortunately the negatives seemed to occur on most days of our trip.
Our driver, Don, was pleasant and very knowledgeable about the wildlife. He was able to answer every question we asked, and we appreciated his willingness to adapt the itinerary when we requested changes. The accommodation throughout the trip was fantastic, the food at each lodge was excellent, and the excursions themselves were amazing.
However, there were several issues that made us feel uncomfortable and affected our overall experience.
On the second day of the safari, Don left us at a petrol station for around an hour while he said he needed to go to the bank. As two white women travelling alone, we attracted a lot of unwanted attention and felt quite unsafe during that time.
On the third day, after returning exhausted and overheated from the gorilla trek, we spent almost three hours waiting at another petrol station while he apparently tried to sort out an issue with the vehicle. He suggested dropping us at a coffee shop, but we declined. He seemed unhappy with our decision, and we felt uncomfortable as it appeared he was also trying to sort out some form of identification or paperwork.
On the fourth day, we were told there were no funds available to pay for the Golden Monkey trekking permits, so we had to pay ourselves. This appeared to be an administrative mistake on Peter's behalf rather than Don's, but it was still disappointing and should not have happened.
The vehicle itself was also very old, and one of the windows would not wind down, which made some of the long journeys uncomfortable.
Overall, while the accommodation, food, excursions, and Don's wildlife knowledge were all excellent, the repeated organisational issues and situations where we felt unsafe overshadowed the positives. Unfortunately, based on our experience, I would not recommend booking with this company.
