When Huguette Clark died in a NYC hospital in 2011 at the tender age of 104, the papers were full with her story and the story of her father:
William A Clark, teacher, lawyer, prospector, merchant, banker, senator, railroad builder and so much more, he was a true Pioneer of the Old West. Type the name in your favorite search engine and you’ll find all kind of stories, some good, some bad. Being a history enthusiast, I got very excited upon discovering that the Mansion he built for his first wife, Katherine, was now a bed and breakfast and I booked the Master suite without hesitation. I shouldn’t have.
The house went through different periods, and eventually was purchased in 1953 by a private party and opened as bed & breakfast. As it is now, the only original features are the walls and all the architectural details. It does not give you any idea of what it was at the time Clark was visiting it from time to time. There is a huge and I mean huge private collection of antique furniture, glassware and silverware, as well as all kinds of little Victorian miniatures, dolls, etc., but I think the spirit of the house has been lost. The bed easily fits in the top three most tortuous beds in my life, its cranky, weak springs make you turn and toss all night long and the pillows are huge rocks of synthetic material, absolutely impossible to sleep on. Breakfast was minimal, served in the formal dinning room. I wish I hadn’t gone. The only thing worth it was the Tour (separate review)
