点评:BUYER BEWARE!
We vacation in Maine every year and always drive by Winterberry Farm. Today we stopped in. As fellow homeschoolers, we had a nice conversation with the owner. I congratulated her on raising her family in such an idyllic place and homeschooling to boot. Coming from a farming town myself, I love locally-sourced honey and when I grabbed a mason jar filled with amber-colored goodness and asked her how much it was, she said "nine dollars."
I grabbed a loaf of blueberry bread and she swiped my debit card and said a receipt will be sent to me. My husband asked afterwards how much it was and I said I didn't know. She never gave me a total which I found odd. But I knew the honey was $9 so how much more would it be for that and a loaf of blueberry bread? When we got home he checked our bank account: $46.88.
You read that right: $46.88.
For a supposed $9 jar of honey and a loaf of blueberry bread.
I immediately called the farm and got her voicemail. I left a message saying there must've been a mistake and that we were charged incorrectly because, unless your last name is Rockefeller, where I come from $46.88 for a jar of honey and a loaf of blueberry bread is a bit, shall we say, extravagant??
This didn't sit right with us so we hopped in the car and drove back, now wasting an hour of our day for this highway robbery. I repeated what I had said on the voicemail to her: that there must've been an error in ringing us up. She said no. She pulled up our order on her computer and proceeded to show us what we paid:
Honey: $25 (though on her screen and in person she said it was $32!)
Bread: $15
Credit Card Charge: $5
I reminded her that when I asked her how much the honey was, she said $9. She proceeded to tell me the *light-colored* honey is $9. If these are all her homemade products, why didn't she tell me the particular jar I picked was $25??
One would think that a smart business owner who doesn't want to rack up 1-star reviews would then clarify that her honey has different prices and that the jar that I put on the counter was actually $25. Might be good to know, eh?
I'm all for supporting local businesses (that's why we stopped and chatted and purchased items from her), but there's a VAST difference between $9 and $25 (or $32 as she told us in person), wouldn't you agree??
When faced with admitting that she basically took advantage of my good faith that a $9 jar of honey is indeed $9, she cut me off, said "I have a lot on my plate right now," got very testy and ordered us to leave her store.
I reminded her that she never gave me a purchase total and never informed me that there was a $5 processing fee, something that even machines do when you make a purchase! She said she doesn't do refunds but she would refund our money, that she felt our vibe was bad and that we needed to leave immediately. I said we're not leaving until I see that the charge is removed. She showed us on the computer and we left with my parting words: "Be sure to look for a review."
And here it is.
She said I had no right to leave a bad review because she refunded the money.
I said I most certainly did (how else can I warn you good people out there?) and her parting words were: "Watch me blast you on there. You watch."
So a nice stop at a local farm turned into something much nastier, and all because this Mary Perry, who was so quick to tell us she'd been in business 25 years, raised three kids on her own, uses all quality ingredients, blah blah blah...didn't have decency to be transparent in her prices, her totals, and her charge fees.
$46.88. For a loaf of bread and a jar of honey.
Regardless of your budget, that's just plain ridiculous.
I get the whole "locally-sourced, local business" zeitgeist happening right now. We all want to shop local, eat local, make local connections. It's what makes our world a smaller, kinder, friendlier place. But it's experiences like today's that give good, honest local farmers a bad name. Thanks Winterberry. I'm now soured on local farm stands.
So, fellow readers...BUYER BEWARE.
On the plus side, this was an awesome homeschool lesson for my boys in dealing with entitled, prickly business owners who prey on tourists' good graces in the hopes that they don't come back and question it.
Oh...and for those of you in the North Haven Island, Maine area: She's moving there soon to open "North Haven Island Florals." Hopefully she "turns over a new leaf" and improves her business practices. Somehow I doubt it. Hey Mary, here's a novel idea: PRICE TAGS.
So, good reader, if you're foolish enough to give Winterberry a go, be sure to ask for prices on *everything* (and some smelling salts after you hear them), ask for the total BEFORE you pay, ask what the processing fee is, and ask for a receipt. (Unless of course you're a Rockefeller and price is of no object to you, then you'll love it!)
If I could give zero stars I would.
Okay Ms. Perry...blast away!
(Note: Don't be fooled by any such peace, love and "Mother Earth" retorts. Know that the experience in person was anything but.)
Sigh...Lesson learned. I will keep her and her family in my prayers.
