点评:There are guides—and then there are guides.
I've been chasing fish in the Florida Keys for more than thirty years, and I've fished with guides of every kind. None has been more enjoyable to spend a day with or has consistently put me on more fish than Captain Luke Kelly.
I was fishing the flats back when bonefish were plentiful, and tarpon were nearly guaranteed. In fact, in the '90s, I hardly needed a guide. I waded the flats until my feet were bloody, hunting the Grey Ghosts, chasing tarpon, and dreaming of that permit. The flats were alive with houndfish, boxfish, barracuda, sharks, and countless other species. I tied flies late into the night, getting ready for another day on the water.
Those days, as we all know, are largely gone. Today we're left with changing conditions, drought, seagrass—for better or worse—and pressure. Lots of pressure. If you're going to pursue the wiliest of quarry today, you need a guide—and a good one.
Needless to say, my passion for flats fishing never faded. I kept searching for that guide who could put me on fish, day after day. And while days on the water aren't always "successful," they can still be joyful, memorable experiences. That's where Captain Luke Kelly comes to mind.
If you've hired guides, then you know there are multiple dimensions to success. Finding fish is only part of it. There's being gracious, being an expert in all things flats-related—the water, the history, the species, and the challenges facing today's anglers and guides. Then there's the equally important skill of connecting with clients, even when the fishing is tough.
Captain Kelly has done all of that, repeatedly. I've never seen him lose his cool. He is invariably patient—especially when I bring along a friend who doesn't spend much time on the bow. He teaches without preaching, encourages without pressuring, and somehow makes every day on the water feel like a privilege. And yes, he tells great stories—the kind that have you laughing long after the day is over. Having him pole me across the skinny water in that classic Hell's Bay certainly doesn't hurt, either.
My time on the water with Luke this June was simply unforgettable, and I'm already looking forward to my next trip with him. From the stories told and the sights seen to the fish caught, every part of the trip reminded me why I fell in love with the Keys in the first place. It was, without question, one for the books.
There are guides—and then there are guides. Captain Luke Kelly is one of the very best.
