点评:My “Surf with Amigas" trip (SWA) to South Costa Rica Jungle Retreat” would have received a 5-star review as so many of the other reviews, but unfortunately it doesn’t deserve so. Aside from a little heat at night that could be solved with an additional fan or two (no AC), the trip was
dreamy. Warm water, great food, on point surf video analysis and instruction, and beautiful yoga. The trip in so many ways lived up to my expectations. Sadly, I am compelled to give SWA and their team a 2-star review. It is all due to what should have but did not happen which spoiled my vacation. On my last day, when riding my last wave to shore, I had an accident exiting the water. It was a closeout wave and the surfboard rail hit me across the bridge of my nose and eyebrow resulting in profuse
bleeding and a broken nose. In no way was this the fault of SWA or the instructors.
However, what was especially upsetting was the lack of medical care and concern to ensure I was stabilized and able to travel home safely. To be succinct – there was a complete lack of proper emergency medical treatment and follow up, and basic lack of empathy for my well-being. It was distressing was that the owners were onsite yet did not stop by to check on me.
Fortunately, two of the participants were trained nurses who were able to provide me with needed medical care. When I returned home, I immediately went to Urgent Care where I learned my nose was broken
in 3 places, and the area around my orbital eye socket was badly bruised, cut, and swollen.
I emailed the co-owners and trip leader about their lack of proper emergency care/follow-up.Their responses are indicative to not being prepared nor concerned about their paying customers:
“I was distracted about moving to the other retreat house and should have done more”.
“I was never informed about the accident. Protocols were not followed”
“Sorry; I could have done better.”
I hope this accident is a HUGE wake up call to the owners. Head injuries are not a joking matter. After my accident I was in shock and disoriented and should have been examined and taken care of properly for a head injury. Had there been brain bleeding or brain swelling, it would not have been advisable to fly. The seriousness of this injury was treated like a minor scrape. If you are considering a surf trip in remote locations, consider how capable and prepared tour companies are to handle accidents and emergencies. As a minimum, bring your own trauma kit and a friend along with you should an emergency arise. How many stars is your life worth?
