So Much More Than Just a Beach – Amazing at Low Tide

点评：Fantastic beach for exploring at low tide
Porthcothan is an excellent beach to visit at low tide and there is so much more to it than the main stretch of sand.
We arrived around an hour before low tide and spent the morning exploring. As the tide went out, huge areas of sand became accessible, with lots of water-filled rock pools containing little fish and other marine life.
The highlight was definitely the right-hand side of the beach (facing the sea). There is a beautiful crystal-clear emerald tidal pool, followed by an amazing hidden cove with a system of five caves. The caves are surprisingly large and almost cathedral-like inside, with plenty of clear sand making them easy to explore when the tide is well out.
There was still a good depth of very clear water around the large rock stack, and we saw people snorkelling both here and around the rocks on the opposite side of the beach. On a calm day it looked fantastic for snorkelling.
Don’t miss the left-hand side either. There are more caves and rock formations to explore and we discovered a lovely informal collection of stones that previous visitors have painted or engraved with names and left tucked into the rock face.
Timing is important. We found around an hour either side of low tide excellent for exploring. We started heading back from the water’s edge about an hour after low tide, by which point we could clearly see the tide beginning to come back in. Obviously check the day’s tide and sea conditions and be sensible around caves and cliffs.
If you enjoy rock pooling, caves, snorkelling and exploring rather than just sitting on a beach, Porthcothan is brilliant. We had a great morning and would definitely return.
