Or at least, my mechanical equivalent.
It’s housed in this old Gothic church—very atmospheric, very "repent your sins before the pendulum stops"—but the new wing is where the real madness lives. There are over 400 of these Black Forest cuckoo clocks. Four hundred. It’s the largest collection in the world, which is a terrifying thought when you imagine them all going off at once. It’d be like a Hitchcock film but with more carved pine and tiny wooden doors.
The clocks themselves are spectacular. They’re intricate, moody, and slightly unhinged—much like a Sunday afternoon with the family. You’ve got these tiny, hand-carved scenes of woodland life, and then, every hour, a little bird pops out to scream at you about the passage of time. It’s incredibly honest, really. I felt a deep, spiritual connection to a miniature automaton that just wants to do its one job and then hide back inside a dark box for fifty-nine minutes.
