点评:During our boat and bike tour of Hanseatic cities, we were fortunate to spend one night in Doesburg, an old fortified city that's steeped in history and in culture yet devoid of the usual crowds that make Cherry Wonderdog want to howl. Hansa refers to an alliance between a number of European trading cities, and Stadius Doesburg is a Dutch national monument that was integral to this trade. It's a brick-built weigh house that dates back to 1478, with stepped gables and Nederrijn Gothic pinnacles. Its adjoining De Waag Stadsbierhuys is considered the oldest pub in the Netherlands.
It was hard not for us to admire its magnificent architecture dominating Doesburg's medieval streets. The Stadius was lit up brightly at night, while during the day it seemed to blend inconspicuously. Inside there were groups of friends, families, and colleagues enjoying their meals and the pub's rich collection of savory 21st century beers.
We had never before visited such an old establishment that still functioned 600 years later. It's definitely worth visiting. Five stars on the Cherry Wonderdog scale of attractions to see and restaurants to visit.
