点评:Sydney train stations are mostly grubby and featureless but Wynyard Station is a bit special because it has the wonderful art installation, ‘Interloop’.
It’s a unique piece of art that celebrates the station’s history.
The enormous, 5 tonne sculpture re-uses two pairs of the station’s original wooden escalators, looping them together, snake-like, on the ceiling. They hang above the new modern steel escalators.
The wooden escalators were removed in a station upgrade 10 years ago but when they were being ripped out, there was a lot of nostalgia for them. They had been there since 1932, the same year the Harbour Bridge was opened and Sydney-siders were sentimental about them. Rather than lose them altogether, local artist, Chris Fox, took them and turned them into this permanent artwork.
To see ‘Interloop’, take the York St exit from the station.
There is also a large 1948 B&W photographic mural of Wynyard station above the new escalators which can be seen as you enter the station from York St.
