An afternoon at Arlington
Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum的点评
点评：Signs in the car park were unclear when we arrived, so our visit started in a bit of a confusing way. Cars were parked in areas which the signs said were for camper vans. There were also walls disguised by grass, which could be hazardous and easy for vehicles to bump into. It was straightforward to claim the free parking for National Trust members at the machine. It would have cost £5.20 to park all day for non-members. I generally don’t think it’s right for attractions to charge a substantial parking fee like this, especially when the car park was in need of some maintenance.
It was a short walk from the car park to the visitor centre. The staff member we spoke to there was friendly and helpful. Admission for myself as a non-member was discounted due to the current reduction in VAT, which was welcomed as it made the visit better value for money. The shop was well-presented and had a nice range of items to buy.
The tea room wasn’t a good experience sadly. It was busy, tables were close together and hadn’t been wiped over. The jacket potatoes sold out just before we were about to order two of these. This was around 1pm and it was disappointing to me that there wasn’t more stock of a clearly popular menu choice. Staff know that the summer holidays are the busiest time, so why not order more potatoes? This meant I had to leave the queue because my Mum and I needed to choose what food we wanted as an alternative. It was irritating having to rejoin the queue afterwards and caused a short delay to our lunch. The main issue in the tea room were the wasps, regularly flitting around the tables causing annoyance to myself and others. I hate wasps and could not relax whilst having lunch due to them buzzing around, being a nuisance! There were several wasps flying around where staff were serving and worst of all, I saw one crawling all over a doughnut in the cake cabinet. This really put me off and therefore didn’t order anything from that cabinet. It was a shame as I’d wanted a scone with jam and cream, but didn’t want to risk buying something a wasp could have landed on, and also didn’t want to be harassed by wasps when eating, as they would probably be lured in by the sweet preserves. I imagine staff can’t control the wasps flying around the tea room but I would like to know if they have any deterrents in place to repel the horrid creatures. The food we had was quite nice, but I couldn’t enjoy it properly due to the wasps. I felt uncomfortable and on edge the whole time we were in the tea room unfortunately. Mum enjoyed the falafel wrap, although the filling was lacking in places.
The carriage museum was a short uphill walk from the tea room. It was interesting and something unique to visit. There was lots of information and a variety of carriages from different eras. Staff were welcoming towards visitors. We enjoyed sitting in one of the carriages to imagine what it might have felt like to travel that way.
Afterwards, we spent around 35 minutes looking around the house. Some of the rooms weren’t open, due to a lack of volunteers. The rooms we saw were quite interesting. There was lots of information about the previous owner, and we particularly liked the grand staircase. Didn’t appreciate being told at 3:50pm that we could only have 5 more minutes, when the house was closing at 4pm and therefore we should have had the option to spend 10 more minutes inside if we’d wanted to. The volunteer practically stood over us for the last couple of minutes making us feel watched/rushed, and ushered us out at 3:55pm.
The gardens were open a little later and were pretty to walk through. My Mum liked that you could make a donation to buy some fresh produce grown on site. Considering we visited in the main summer holidays, we felt the house and museum should have been open for longer (last entry to both was 3:30pm and they closed at 4pm - or sooner if staff want to go early, see aforementioned comment). We would have benefitted from an extra hour or two.

可惜的是，我们在茶室的体验并不好。那里人很多，桌子挨得很近，而且也没有被擦拭干净。就在我们准备点两份薯饼的时候，发现它们已经卖光了。当时大约是下午1点，一个明显很受欢迎的菜品竟然没有更多库存，这真让我感到失望。员工们应该知道暑假是最繁忙的时期才对。那为什么不再多点些土豆呢？这样一来我就不得不离开排队队伍，因为我妈妈和我需要挑选其他想吃的食物。之后又得重新排队，这真是烦人，还导致我们的午餐时间稍有延迟。茶室里最主要的问题就是黄蜂——它们经常在桌间飞来飞去，惹得我和其他人都很烦。我讨厌黄蜂，因为它们到处乱飞实在很烦人，弄得我连吃午饭时都无法安心！在工作人员服务的区域，有几只黄蜂飞来飞去。最糟糕的是，我还看到一只黄蜂在蛋糕展示柜里的甜甜圈上爬来爬去。这真让我倒胃口，所以我没有从那个展示柜里买任何东西。其实我本来很想买一份搭配果酱和奶油的司康饼的，但又不想冒险买到可能有黄蜂停留过的食品；同时也不想在吃的时候被黄蜂骚扰——毕竟那些甜味的果酱很可能会吸引黄蜂前来。我想茶室里的员工无法控制四处乱飞的黄蜂，但我想知道他们是否采取了什么措施来驱赶这些讨厌的昆虫。我们吃的食物挺不错的，但由于有黄蜂在周围飞，我根本没法好好享用。很遗憾，我们在茶室里的整个时间都感到不自在且紧张不安。妈妈很喜欢法拉费卷饼，不过有些地方的馅料有点少。
从茶室出发，沿着上坡路走一段距离就能到达马车博物馆。这次参观既有趣又独具特色。那里有大量相关资料，还有各个历史时期的各种车厢。工作人员对游客也很热情友善。我们喜欢坐在其中一辆车厢里，想象着当年乘车旅行的感受。
之后，我们花了大约35分钟参观这座房子。由于缺少志愿者，有些房间并未对游客开放。我们参观过的房间都相当有趣，里面有很多关于前任主人的资料。我们特别喜欢那个宏伟的楼梯。不过，当天下午3点50分时，工作人员告诉我们只能再待5分钟了——而博物馆4点才闭馆，按理说如果我们愿意，应该能多待10分钟才对。在最后几分钟里，那位志愿者几乎就站在我们旁边，让我们感觉像是被监视着、被催促着离开，最终在3点55分把我们赶了出去。
花园开放的时间稍晚一些，漫步其中倒也挺惬意的。我妈妈很喜欢这里可以捐款来购买农场新鲜采摘的农产品这一做法。由于我们是在夏季假期期间到访，我们觉得这座宅邸和博物馆的开放时间应该再长一些（两者的最终入场时间都是下午3点半，4点即闭馆——如果工作人员想提前离开，甚至会更早关门，正如前文所述）。如果能再多开放一两个小时，对我们来说就再好不过了。
