点评:This is a very interesting museum with two areas of focus - the history of the Madeiran whaling industry and today’s efforts to study and protect cetaceans in the islands. The visit is enhanced by the use of audio headsets which respond to sensors in the building to trigger the information relevant to the many displays and videos. However they are so sensitive that you are in constant danger of having one commentary truncated as another one begins if you move more than two or three feet - this became very frustrating. Additionally although we visited on a Tuesday in March there were not enough of the headsets available and we had to wait along with many other people for them to be recharged - just make a few more available! We were not permitted to enter without a headset, although given the large amount of written information on the walls it would have been possible to get some interpretation this way, albeit that the experience is geared towards the use of the headsets.
The lower floor devoted to the history of whaling and whalers is in parts very graphic, with videos and images of whales being killed, sliced up and processed. As such young children might find this upsetting. Nevertheless we learned a lot about the industry, not least that it only continued for c 40 years. By contrast the upper floor which focuses on whales and other cetaceans, conservation activities and the evolution of the species is much more family friendly. Some of the videos were a little too ‘Disney style’ for our tastes but are no doubt aimed at children. We would like to have seen more specific information on the different species of cetacean found around Madeira.
There is a decent cafe on site, and the staff were generally very helpful. We spent 2 hours there in total and felt the cost of €10 was very reasonable
