点评：My father fought at Bastogne. He was in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, under the 101st Airborne Division. Before he died, I researched his military record and he allowed me to interview him. He'd never talked about his experiences before, only in scattered pieces. The stories he told me were chilling.
It's been my dream to travel to Bastogne and re-trace my father's steps during World War II. The opportunity to do just that finally presented itself. I had maps, I had my father's testimony, and I'd studied satellite photos of the area. But I wanted to make sure I didn't miss the nuances; I knew I needed a guide who knew the terrain and I was determined to hire the best.
My research led me to Reg. He has impeccable credentials. He has studied the battle. He's served as a guide for those who served in Bastogne and for actors who portrayed those who served in Bastogne. I'm so happy I hired Reg. He knows his stuff. He showed up right on time and we immediately went to the site of my father's first battle: Wardin. He helped me set the scene and was determined to find my father's machine gun position on a hill just outside town. And I believe we found it. He took me to Bois Jacques, to a place where the 501st entered the woods for one of the most fierce battles of the siege. There were still foxholes there, my father may have dug one of those foxholes and hunkered down in it.
In other words, Reg didn't give me his standard tour. He molded it to my dad's stay, and took me to the places he was in 1944 and 1945. Reg gave me context about what happened in those places. He showed me the ridge where my dad was positioned during the siege. I deeply appreciated that. He told me stories he'd heard from the veterans of Bastogne he had guided.
He was also a pleasant person to spend the day with. Above all, Reg's insights made my stay in Bastogne deeply meaningful. I highly recommend his tour.
