If advance reservations are already gone, you still get another shot: the park releases a small batch of next‑day tickets the night before. Check the website for the exact release time, be logged into your NPS account ahead of time, and be ready on the page—those tickets disappear in seconds. You can also get on a waiting list where cancelled tickets show up, which works quite well, but again, you need to be fast when notified.
The Nymph → Dream → Emerald → Haiyaha hike is honestly a dream. It’s easy to moderate overall, and even at 6 a.m. the trail is already busy. The later you go, the more crowded it gets.
Starting from the Bear Lake Trailhead, the classic Nymph → Dream → Emerald route is about 3.2–3.6 miles round‑trip with 600–770 ft of elevation gain, usually taking 2–3 hours depending on pace and how long you hang out at each lake.
Distances and elevation gain:
Nymph Lake: ~1.2 miles RT, ~236 ft gain
Dream Lake: ~2.2 miles RT, ~443 ft gain
Emerald Lake: ~3.2–3.6 miles RT, ~605–771 ft gain
If you add Lake Haiyaha, the loop becomes roughly 4.5 miles round‑trip with about 1,125 ft of total gain.
And seriously—don’t skip Haiyaha. It’s incredible.
