点评:Ladybower Reservoir is a fantastic place for a medium-length hike and a wonderful day out in the Peak District.
You can walk all the way around the reservoir if you want, but in our opinion, the real highlight is on the opposite side of the dam, where the water flows downstream.
As you make your way down the hill, you’ll find a lovely stream with small waterfalls that follows the valley. There is a marked walking trail, but unfortunately, it doesn’t actually take you down to the most beautiful parts of the stream. To reach them, you’ll need to leave the official path and follow one of the well-worn informal trails that many other visitors have clearly used before. It’s not an official route, but it’s where we discovered the most breathtaking scenery.
We found crystal-clear water, countless little waterfalls, large rocks perfect for sitting and relaxing, and plenty of peaceful spots to enjoy a snack or a chocolate while listening to the sound of the flowing water.
Many people were happily standing ankle-deep in the stream, and a few ventured in up to their knees. The water isn’t deep, but it is extremely cold, even on a hot summer’s day. That’s because it flows directly from Ladybower Reservoir, whose water stays very cold year-round. Swimming in the reservoir itself is not permitted, and there are signs on the dam warning visitors about this. Once you feel the temperature of the stream, you immediately understand why! The water is absolutely freezing—but also beautifully clear.
This is the kind of place where you can easily spend hours exploring, taking photos, sitting on the rocks, or simply enjoying nature.
It’s an excellent destination for families, even better if you’re visiting with a dog, and perfect if you’re looking for a scenic walk that isn’t too demanding.
The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it’s a shame that the official walking trail doesn’t lead visitors to these spectacular riverside spots. They’re easily the most beautiful part of the whole area, yet you have to leave the marked path to find them.
Despite that, I would absolutely recommend visiting Ladybower Reservoir. It’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve explored in the Peak District.
