点评:The phrase "hidden gem" is very over-used but this really is! Only 2 minutes from the east end of the Minster but tucked away down a narrow passage off Goodramgate, you wouldn't know it was there. I saw some leaflets for it but I must admit I thought it was just a cafe and wedding venue - I didn't realise that you can also look round the restored medieval hall. It is only one room but very interesting - there are extremely helpful volunteer guides around to tell you the story of the building, or you can read the display boards and look round by yourself. It has a fascinating history, from being the refectory for the Minster's vicars choral in the 13th century, to being a private dwelling, then used by businesses and becoming derelict and threatened with demolition until it was fortunately saved and restored. All the phases of the history are visible in the walls. Well worth half an hour of anyone's time! Admission is free but donations are appreciated.
The cafe is in an extension and was also lovely. Very quiet on a Friday lunchtime and I enjoyed a parsnip soup with a cheese scone and chutney. Very friendly staff.
