点评：This was my first visit to the estate and it was disappointing. I visited with my wife, daughter in law and two grandchildren. I booked in at the office. There was quite a young boy at reception. He wasn’t very informative. He asked if I wanted to see the animals at the Ark as it’s an additional cost of £2, but well worth it. I had to ask about the amenities and where he’d recommend for my two young grandchildren. He suggested the pirate ship. He advised taking the blue trail to the pirate ship, which we did. I asked if there was a map. There was a colour one at reception but none available as a hand out. I took a photo of it for reference. The young lad said that it was out of date, which explained why the walks had different coloured names from what was on the trails and why I couldn’t find the blue walk he recommended to us on the map. He did point me in the direction and I found the signage.
As it was my first visit I never realised the terrain is not particularly buggy friendly, but as the recent weather had been dry I assumed any paths would be too. It was uneven and muddy. When we reached the Pirate ship there were three swings. All three of them were caked in mud. I’m assuming kids were standing on them rather than sitting down. A woman was trying to clean one with wet wipes so that her granddaughter could use it. We tried similar but despite our best efforts my granddaughter’s clothes ended up muddy. The baby swing was unusable as you can see from the attached photo. I checked the map to see where other play areas and the fairy garden were, but as you see nothing is marked on the map. Disappointingly we trudged back towards the cafe for some refreshments to wait until 12pm when the Ark opened to see the animals. Unfortunately the cafe wasn’t open.
As I was leaving reception, earlier, a lady asked if the cafe would be open at some point. The young lad explained they were hoping to get someone in to open it. He never mentioned there was some doubt about the cafe, before I’d paid, that the cafe was closed and might not open.
The cafe still wasn’t open when we got back. I assume they couldn’t get replacement staff. We hadn’t brought any food. We’d arrived around 10am and anticipated having lunch in the cafe about 1pm, then resuming our day out in the estate. We couldn’t leave the children hungry. That resulted with having to cut our visit short, which was very disappointing, and find somewhere local to eat.
As we had a little time to kill while we waited for the Ark to open we decided to take in the gardens which are intended to be peaceful and tranquil. Signs ask visitors to respect that, particularly if there are children in the group. It’s not easy with a five and two year old. However the gardens were worth the visit. We followed a path around the grounds where there was a lovely view over the Clyde which eventually led back towards the cafe. There are some spectacular plants there. In particular a fir tree with blue pine cones named Abies Koreana (blue coned Korean fir tree). There was also a large plant at the cafe, I believe is called the White Profusion Butterfly plant. I can see why. I’ve never seen so many butterflies on a plant. My five year old granddaughter was enthralled at the sight of all the butterflies. They were mainly Red Admirals with a sprinkling of Cabbage Whites.
At 12pm we headed for the Ark to see the animals. It’s a little walk up a hill but definitely worth it. The lady in charge (Nora) was extremely professional, helpful, informative and enthusiastic with the children. There were alpacas, pigs, rare Valais blacknose sheep, hens, turkeys, Shetland ponies and more. There’s even cats which have their own area. Children are encouraged to play with them, by using fluffy toys on the end of sticks. Nora explained the work she does with the Kibble foundation and how the youths had helped build the Fairy Garden, which is also not on the map. Although we’d seen signs for it on our walk we couldn’t find it. However Nora gave us directions and we managed to visit it before we left. On our way there we also found a very large fort and three slides not marked on the map.
Findlayson was really busy on the day we visited. It appears to be a popular location. However for first time visitors there’s little or no information available at the reception area. With the cafe being shut we didn’t get time to fully explore the estate. The only swings at the Pirate ship were unfit for use. My granddaughter ended up with soiled clothes. It would be useful if these were inspected throughout the day and cleaned so they are fit for purpose. I’m not sure if they are cleaned at any time.
The map needs an urgent update as there is a dearth of current information. A handout is essential but if that’s not a viable alternative, visitors could take a photo of the master copy held at reception.
Better signage is required on the trail paths to aid visitors. The website should have the facility to let visitors know if the cafe is available each day so alternative arrangements can be made e.g. a picnic.
