Amazing trip, I can’t recommend it enough! Especially to anyone studying marine biology or divers wanting to put their skills to good use. I stayed for two weeks this summer and wish it could have been longer.
Volunteers do two work dives per day (plus extra fun diving at sunrise/at night!) and I loved how the work dives covered the full life cycle of an artificial reef, from constructing the structures underwater to collecting and planting coral, scrubbing off algae and removing harmful species. Despite threats to the coral there is loads of life underwater and you can expect to see eagle rays, octopus, frog fish, lobsters, nudibranchs, mantis shrimp, and so many turtles!
The accommodation at camp isn’t fancy but it does the job and each cube tent has a big fan which was more than enough to stay cool at night. And the food was incredible! Hearty mostly vegetarian meals with loads of fresh fruit. Camp has a really nice community vibe with everyone pitching in to clean and wash up. Almost everyone came as solo travellers and it sounds cheesy but it really didn’t take long to feel like we’d known each other for ages.
The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable and I learned a huge amount from them (both conservation and card games). Truly a very special place.
