点评:After years of being fascinated with Jane Goodall and her chimpanzee research, I finally made it to Gombe Stream National Park and realized my dream of seeing the chimpanzees with my own eyes!
MK (Michael) at Mothalands Safari Tours was really professional and made sure the trip went smoothly, from picking me up at my hotel in Kigoma, travelling to Gombe, liaising with the national park staff, even helping carry my bag during the somewhat strenuous mountain hikes, taking photos and videos of me and the chimpanzees and giving me a USB stick containing them. He told me so much about Tanzania culture and the way of life, and made sure I got to the airport safely afterwards.
A specialist Gombe guide accompanied us on the two chimpanzee treks, consulting with a "tracker" who told us where we should go to see the chimpanzees. We were fortunate to see so many chimpanzees on both treks, doing things such as:
- Fishing for termites in a hole using a stick.
- Playing fighting.
- Hunting for a fox!
- "Charging display" by a dominant male.
- Mothers and babies, including the famous Gremlin (now aged 54) with her children.
We were faced by a number of challenges:
1) On the departure day (Sunday), the public boat was not operating, so we needed to get a more expensive private boat (US$150 over budget)
2) I had paid the tour fee in full to MK, and although the plan was that he would therefore pay all the necessary fees at the Gombe national park office, poor network issues meant that he could not do the "phone money transfer" he had intended to, and he requested that I pay by VISA card at the Gombe national park office (thus effectively paying for the tour twice) - in the understanding that he would reimburse me for the VISA payment after the tour.
3) The accommodation, meal and guide charges were more expensive than expected (so it meant that MK's original tour price had considered the previous season's prices) - Gombe does not inform anyone until you actually go there.
4) On his way to Kigoma to meet me, MK had car problems and needed to pay for his car to be repaired, and get alternative transport partway.
5) The boat staff which took us to Gombe did not pay the boat entry fee or people entry fee at Gombe national park, so MK was ordered to pay this, and he would be reimbursed later when the boat staff actually paid Gombe national park (MK contacted them to requested that they do this ASAP).
At the start of the trip, I paid cash to account for (1) and (3) - the accommodation portion, to MK.
After the trip, I had a long discussion with MK about the reimbursement of the my VISA payment.
- Because of unexpected costs such as (4) and (5), MK had used more cash than expected, and only had enough cash with him to be able to reimburse me for just under 50% of the amount I had paid.
- While looking at the unpaid remainder of that amount, I agreed to reduce the due amount to account for:
(a) The unbudgeted-for increases in (3)-meal/guide charges, and also to pay for the drinks I had ordered.
(b) The generous tip I was planning to pay him.
We agreed the remaining amount due to me. MK said that he did not have the cash with him, and that he was not able to get that amount from the bank for me that day.
He talked about his losses due to (4) and (5), _perhaps_ in the hope that I would say that he did not owe me anything!?! (that's how it felt). I could not agree to that.
Regarding (4) - I should not be expected to pay for his car repair!
Regarding (5) - He would get that money back eventually, so I should not be required to pay that.
Anyway, MK suggested that his staff member who was in Dar es Salaam that evening could bring the agreed cash amount to me at my hotel after I arrived there from Kigoma that evening.
I gave MK my hotel address details, and told him I would email him after I arrived at the hotel, so he could tell his staff to come.
To cut a long story short - the staff member never came, I was never reimbursed the remaining due amount, so I have been left overcharged for the tour.
MK told me I would be paid that evening - but his staff never came.
I feel like because of the car breakdown (4) and the boat staff non-payment (5), MK did not want to pay me the amount owed to me.
Because of the extra money I agreed to pay for unexpected pay increases, and the generous tip, I had willingly paid an extra almost US#400 about the original tour price (which was USD618 - so I had paid almost double).
I had paid a very high air fare for international travel to and from Tanzania.
I was fair in paying to cover unexpected budget increases, and a generous tip.
I have paid more than enough and it does not seem unreasonable to expect to be reimbursed fairly for the money owed to me. I honestly believe I had been very reasonable and fair.
It seems unfair that MR is effectively refusing to pay me the remaining agreed amount that he owes me.
MK is a great tour guide, really friendly person, and he has positive online reviews from everyone.
It saddens me that I have to write these negative comments. But I am only speaking the truth. I believe that I should post honestly about how I feel I have been overcharged, with no apparent plan to ever reimburse me.
Because of this:
- I cannot in good faith recommend MK and Mothaland Safari Tours.
- I would choose a different tour company when visiting Tanzania next time.

- 母亲和婴儿,包括著名的 Gremlin(现年 54 岁)和她的孩子。
