A quiet sanctuary for birds, turtles, and humans
Kimcha Village Bird Sanctuary的点评
点评:This was definitely "off the beaten path", but was just about our best experience on the island. This nature preserve is an incredible example of thoughtful restoration of destroyed and abandoned land comprising about 170 acres. This was once a sand excavation site, ruined for any other uses, until a partnership of two visionaries, Kimmett and Charmaine, acquired the land years ago and have worked endlessly to transform it into a wetlands bird sanctuary. The extensive chain of ponds, surrounded by native trees and other vegetation are accessible by easy-walking trails, along which you'll have a guided tour. Another feature: the sanctuary is bordered by a secluded beach where numerous sea turtles seem to have as their permanent hang-out. We really enjoyed watching about a dozen of them swimming in the shallow waters. After several hours of exploring (the sea was too rough for snorkeling today), we were treated to the best meal we've had on the island. So, if you really want to get away from the high-rise resorts, busy streets, noise, and just enjoy quiet, solitude, and nature, KimCha Village should be at the top of your list. Note: my husband and I are dedicated conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts at home in Texas, and this type of visit is just what we tend to seek out when travelling.
