点评：A Return to the River Wye – Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat
On 12 September 2026, I took a 9-mile canoe trip down the River Wye from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat with my much younger goddaughter. It turned out to be one of those days when an enjoyable outing becomes something rather more memorable.
I hadn’t properly been on the Wye since a school trip in 1970, apart from the occasional pleasure boat and ferry, so paddling it again after more than half a century was a wonderful opportunity to revisit a happy experience from the past. The river, of course, looked much the same, although I suspect I appreciated the scenery rather more this time around!
We were blessed with fairly warm and dry weather, with only occasional winds to contend with. At times the breeze was helpfully behind us; at others, it seemed determined to make us work for our progress. But that was all part of the fun. There was plenty of time to enjoy the peaceful stretches of river, the surrounding countryside and the simple pleasure of making our way downstream under our own steam.
The 9-mile journey from Kerne Bridge to Symonds Yat was long enough to feel like a proper adventure without becoming an endurance test. Sharing it with my goddaughter made it particularly special. It was great to see her enjoying the experience as much as I was, and even better to discover that she enjoyed it sufficiently to start planning a family fun day on the river with her own children.
There was something rather satisfying about that. A school trip in 1970 had left me with a fondness for the Wye; more than fifty years later, I was able to return and create a new memory with the next generation. If she gets her family day organised, perhaps the tradition will continue.
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day out: beautiful scenery, good company, a little exercise, a touch of nostalgia, great staff and the pleasure of being back on the River Wye. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that reconnect us with the past while giving us something new to look forward to.
